R.I.P. Mark Goddard, Maj. Don West of Lost in Space

Mark Goddard, known for his role as the hot-headed pilot Don West on the television series Lost in Space, has passed away at the age of 87. His wife, Evelyn, took to social media to announce the sad news. "I am deeply sorry to inform you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th. Just a few days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia," she wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post.

"We had hope when he was moved to a rehabilitation center, but then the doctors discovered that he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable disease. He received excellent care at the Pat Roche Hospice Home and was able to pass away peacefully and with dignity.

His children and I had the opportunity to express our love and say our goodbyes. I will never understand how I was so lucky to spend 33 years with such a loving, kind, and handsome man who always made me laugh."

Goddard will be best remembered by science fiction enthusiasts for his portrayal of Major Don West on Lost in Space. He was also fondly known for his role on The Detectives, where he starred alongside Robert Taylor.

Bill Mumy, who played the precocious Will Robinson on Lost in Space, shared his memories of Goddard in a heartfelt post on Facebook. "Mark was a beloved friend and brother to me for 59 years.

..Our last words to each other were 'I love you'," Mumy wrote. "Mark was not only a talented actor but also a naturally gifted and trained one. He sometimes felt constrained by the campy nature of Lost in Space, but he also embraced and loved it...He had an incredible charm and eternal youthfulness. Mark was always funny and spontaneous, and he loved to have a good time."

In addition to his successful acting career, Goddard made a significant impact in the field of education. He obtained his master's degree from Bridgewater State College, graduating 30 years after he first began his higher education journey.

Goddard embarked on a second career as an educator, serving as a special education teacher at the F.L. Chamberlain School in Middleboro, Massachusetts from 1991 to 2009. Despite his career change, he continued to nurture his passion for the performing arts by teaching an acting class.

Mark Goddard is survived by his wife, Evelyn Pezzulich, and his three children. His legacy as a talented actor and educator will not be forgotten, and he will always be cherished by his colleagues, friends, and fans.
