Vince Gilligan, the creator of the hit TV series "Breaking Bad", gave fans a glimpse into his thought process behind the gripping series finale. He noted that while some fans might be disappointed with the ending, he and his team were satisfied with the definitive conclusion that saw the fall of meth kingpin Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston. Gilligan and his team explored various potential finales, including one where Walt survives but his family gets destroyed, another where Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul, kills Walt, and a version where Walt escapes unpunished. They ultimately had Walt redeem himself slightly before his death and leaves his family financially secure, staying true to his initial intent since the first episode. The choice to spare Jesse was based on their emotional connection to the character and the belief that his punishment had already been severe enough through physical, mental and emotional suffering.
