But none are as gut-wrenching as the story of Chuck Hughes, the only NFL player to die on the field during a game. Now, most football fans probably don't even know who Chuck Hughes was – it's been almost 40 years since his death. Charles Frederick Hughes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 2nd, 1943. After a stellar college career, he was drafted in the fourth round of the 1967 NFL/AFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Before the 1970 season, Hughes was traded to the Detroit Lions. Fast forward to the 1971 season – Chuck Hughes was a backup receiver, in his second season with Detroit and his fifth season in the NFL. He was just 28 years old.
