During a docuseries on Michael Jordan’s championship year with the Chicago Bulls in 1997/98, the longstanding controversy with Isiah Thomas boiled over. While reminiscing about the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, Jordan made a disrespectful comment about Thomas, which although disturbing, didn't upset him as much as three other words. Their rivalry began in the late 80s when Jordan's Bulls toppled Thomas' Pistons. Thomas claims, however, he was unaware any animosity persisted, believing they resolved their problems well before shooting the documentary. A major contention point was the belief that Jordan intentionally excluded Thomas from the infamous "Dream Team" of 1992, which Jordan denied. Thomas' confusion escalated when he observed the derogatory comments Jordan made about him on The Last Dance with his family during the lockdown. While Jordan's comment labeling Thomas an 'a**hole' shocked him, what got to him the most was the claim, 'I hate him' which Michael Jordan addressed to Thomas.
