Gubler has been beloved by fans for portraying Spencer Reid since the very first season.
However, he did not return for Evolution's revival season. Showrunner Erica Messer explained that Gubler couldn’t participate due to scheduling conflicts with other projects.
Despite his absence, the production team kept Reid’s desk on set, suggesting that the character still exists in the world of the show. A.J. Cook (who plays JJ) admitted that she also considered leaving if Gubler wasn’t coming back, but ultimately chose to stay.
Currently, Gubler is working on CBS’s new show Einstein, where he plays Albert Einstein’s great-grandson, Lewis Einstein. The series, originally set to premiere in fall 2025, has been delayed until the 2026-2027 TV season.
